IL Chicago
Old Town
Principally located along North Wells Street between Division and North Avenue, Old Town connects Lincoln Park to the Gold Coast and is known for its charming blend of historic architecture, eclectic shops, lively entertainment venues, and top-tier dining. The neighborhood features some of Chicago’s best-preserved Victorian-era homes, giving it a timeless character amid modern city life.
Originally inhabited by the Potawatomi, Miami, and Illinois tribes, the area saw a wave of European settlement after the Treaty of Chicago in 1833. German Catholics were especially prominent, and their legacy lives on in landmarks like St. Michael’s Church, a Bavarian-built structure that was one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The name "Old Town" stems from the triangular shape created by North Avenue, Clark Street, and Ogden Avenue.
Today, Old Town is an upscale residential neighborhood with million-dollar single-family homes and modern condos, as well as newer developments bringing more housing options to the western edge of the area. Its walkability, character, and proximity to downtown continue to attract professionals, families, and long-time Chicagoans alike.
The neighborhood is served by Chicago Public Schools, including the highly rated LaSalle Language Academy, a K–8 magnet school. The CTA Red Line and several bus routes offer excellent transit access to the Loop, O’Hare Airport, and beyond.
Once a countercultural hotspot in the '60s and '70s, Old Town’s creative spirit endures in iconic institutions like Zanies Comedy Club, The Second City, and the beloved Old Town Art Fair. Dining favorites such as Topo Gigio, Orso’s, Old Town Pour House, and The VIG draw locals and visitors alike, while casual staples like Vanille Patisserie keep daily life convenient and delicious.
With its rich history, vibrant culture, and unbeatable location, Old Town remains one of Chicago’s most enduring and desirable neighborhoods.
